Ollie Glatzer : From There to Here

When: Thursdays-Saturdays, 2-5 p.m. Continues through July 27
Paul Klee said “A line is a dot that went for a walk.” A similar humor animates the paintings of Ollie Glatzer at the Sara Lisch Gallery in downtown Berkeley. Glatzer, a multitalented artist, violist, game designer, producer, and composer, contacted Lisch after seeing her outdoor exhibitions at Cedar and Shattuck (CedarStreetGallery.com), and From Here to There is the result. The ten small paintings in paint marker and acrylic gouache on canvas are abstract, but figurative by implication, with wry titles like “Guts of the Matter,” “Hat and Beard,” Photon Factory” and “Harmolodics,” suggesting that the pop-up-style shapes — reminiscent of Dubuffet and Aztec art — are portraits of personnages or intellectual systems. The gridded backgrounds replicate Glatzer’s sketchbook paper and may refer to Old Master drawing-transfer techniques.
