Oh My Sweet Land

When: Sat., March 3, 2 p.m. 2018
Price: $50
Palestian playwright Amir Nizar Zuabi’s Oh My Sweet Land might make you cry, but it might just be the onion-cutting. This one-woman show set in a kitchen brings the stories of Syrian refugees to life through a vital aspect of Arab culture: cooking. A woman of mixed Syrian-German parentage, played by Nora el Samahy, recalls her encounter with a Syrian man in Paris, all the while preparing kubah, a traditional Syrian dish. Many moments of her harrowing narrative are inspired by interviews Zuabi conducted in refugee camps on a trip to Jordan. The show is a whirlwind hour as we follow this woman in her search to find the vanished man she loves, the smell of onions and spices wafting out over the audience. Fortunately, the cooking isn’t all for show — afterwards, attendees are invited to share food and engage in community conversation.
