Comedy drama
A fortyish, single female office worker named Setsuko (played with an expectant gleam in her eye by actress Terajima Shinobu) adopts the "American name" of Lucy and escapes from her dull, lonely life in Tokyo by taking a road trip to Southern California in search of her footloose niece. And it's not so much what happens to Setsuko/Lucy but what doesn't, as she soaks up life in the American mellow lane. Director Hirayanagi Atsuko - adapting her own short film with writer Boris Frumin - deliberately slows it down to let events play out on Setsuko's face. Brilliant tactic, calm but rewarding character study. Costarring Josh Hartnett, Kutsuna Shiori, Minami Kaho, and, in a cameo, movie star Yakusho Kôji (95 min., 2017, not rated)
