Brace yourselves, fans of Off the Grid in North Berkeley (not to mention that other city west of Treasure Island): Off the Grid organizer Matt Cohen is bringing the biggest gathering of food trucks he’s ever attempted to Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley.

Off the Grid Golden Gate Fields will set up over four Saturdays, from August 27 through September 17 — thirty food trucks opening their order flaps starting at 11 a.m. The first race starts at 12:45 p.m., and because the trucks will be in the grandstand area, you will have to pay track admission ($6, 17 and under free, though you have to be 18 to wager). The whole thing is intended to have an old-timey, Ascot sort of vibe, meaning you’re encouraged to wear a big hat. And drink Bloody Marys. “The idea is to dress up a little bit,” Cohen said. “It’s a throwback day.” As for hats, the press release stresses “extra points for oversized or pillbox styles,” and says a “hat hawker” will be on hand, just in case you don’t have a sweet little pillbox number in your closet.

Cohen told WTF the events were initiated by the Golden Gate Fields people — its sister track in SoCal, Santa Anita, has hosted similar food-truck events. Call it a play to get a younger demographic — make that a younger professional demographics — to the track. ). Also: free shuttle from North Berkeley BART.

Some trucks will rotate in and out over the four weeks, though vendors who’ll definitely show include Hapa SF, 3-Sum Eats, Chairman Bao, Curry Up Now, and Whisk on Wheels. Get updates at Off the Grid’s Facebook page.
