Extremely indie character study follows the bottoming-out of a thirtyish New Yorker named Donna (Jenny Slate, in a likable turn), whose stand-up-comic career and fitfully successful social life suddenly take a back seat to her unplanned pregnancy. As conceived by director Gillian Robespierre and writers Karen Maine, Elisabeth Holm, and Anna Bean, the problem is a universal one: What to do with this thing called a life. Thanks to Slate’s frantic/needy performance and Robespierre’s damped-down optimistic outlook, we’re on Donna’s side all the way. True-to-life support playing by Gaby Hoffmann, Jake Lacy, Richard Kind, Polly Draper, and Gabe Liedman (85 min.).
