Action, Adventure, Science fiction
Tom Cruise, an Earth “evolved beyond recognition,” “a terrifying threat,” “a beautiful stranger,” and “the fate of humanity in his hands” – that’s a recipe for a headache. And director Joseph Kosinski (TRON: Legacy) delivers, with the futuristic story of a tech warrior/worker on security and drone maintenance duty on ravaged Earth in the year 2070, and his big identity problem. Is Jack Harper (Cruise) a real human or a clone? Good question. People have been asking that about Cruise for years. No matter the screenplay by adapted from Kosinski and Arvid Nelson’s comic book, no matter the presence of Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko as Jack’s flight-suited babes, the tepid dialogue and boring effects shine through. A giant IMAX screen makes a bad movie even worse. Oblivion: Not just a title, a description of where this hunk of space junk is headed. Costarring Morgan Freeman, Melissa Leo, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. (126 min.)
