A documentary visit to the Obituary Dept. of The New York Times engagingly demonstrates that editorial death notices, and the reporters who write them, don’t have to be gloomy and formulaic, and that obits can even qualify as an alternative type of investigative journalism. Best of all, in director Vanessa Gould’s love letter to the dying craft of in-depth news gathering, is the realization that everyone alive has a story potentially worth telling, even the seemingly lonely man who tends the newspaper’s morgue -- a 10,000-drawer treasure trove of clippings and photos – all by himself, the last survivor of a formerly thirty-person staff. Catnip for info addicts and newsprint fiends (93 min., 2016, not rated) (K.V.)
