Oaktown Jazz Workshops Benefit

When: Wed., Jan. 21, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $20

Chicago-raised trumpeter KhalilShaheed has taught jazz to young musicians for roughly three decades, balancing his work as an educator with the rigors of being a professional musician. Besides helming the Oaktown Jazz Workshops, which he founded in 1994, Shaheed leads his own quintet and the Middle Eastern-influenced jazz band, the Mo'Rockin Project (so named for its emphasis on Moroccan instrumentation and North African rhythms). Mo' Rockin Project performs Wednesday, Jan. 21 at a benefit for Oaktown Jazz Workshops, which also features the Kev Choice ensemble (whose frontman teaches in Shaheed's program one day a week), the Dynamic Ms. Faye Carol, Miko Marks, and the Redwood Brass. At OaklandYoshi's (510 Embarcadero). 8 p.m., $20. Yoshis.com
