This man is/was a close friend and the idea that he would begin a shooting match is not his character - more so that he dropped the weapon. He had been incarcerated, yes, and was trying the uphill battle of starting over. As a felon and not much formal education it ain't easy, but he was in no way an unintelligent person. (As I knew him he did not carry a weapon ever - he often cared for his younger nephews.) Living in Oakland for about 20 years I have seen too much of this. This week it has taken one of my circle although I feel a pain each time. The officers, I hear, were firing on him as he ran into a garage after he dropped the weapon. That was wrong to do - where is a person going from a garage and without a weapon? and the cane, btw, was needed from a recent knee re-injury from playing basketball...
