AC Transit board member Rebecca Kaplan trounced Oakland school board member Kerry Hamill in the race for the city's at-large council seat, 62% to 38%. Measure OO, the new Kids First initiative, also cruised to victory, winning 53% to 47%. OO requires the council to set aside a millions of dollars each year for after school programs and other youth initiatives.

Oakland voters, however, soundly rejected two parcel tax measures, Measures N and NN. N would have raised teacher salaries and helped charter schools, but it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to win, garnering 61% of the vote. NN, which would have added 180 police personnel, also couldn't meet the two-thirds requirement, getting just 55 percent. Finally, Peralta Community College trustee Marcie Hodge easily won reelection, defeating challenger Marlon McWilson, 61 percent to 38 percent.
