Art Murmur offers an accessible way to get to know Oakland artists every month, but it’s rare that art enthusiasts are able to see local artists in action. So SLATE Contemporary Gallery (473 25th St., Oakland) has selected four artists to participate in a live five-hour painting session outside of its space on Thursday, September 18, during the Third Thursday Art Walk. Chosen from a pool of submissions, artists Nite Owl, Cameron Thompson, Desi Mundo, and Peskador will each be painting a four-by-eight-foot aluminum panel. The artistic content is up to them, as long as they complete their work within the time limit and offer an interpretation of the theme: Oakland here and now. All of the selected artists are seasoned muralists: Both Nite Owl and Cameron Thompson are known for their colorful bird paintings, while Desi Mundo and Peskador’s work often centers around themes of community and cultural pride. The event will offer an exciting opportunity to get to know some of the artists that are painting the walls of our city, and their visual expressions of contemporary culture.
