Oakland Freeway Shooter: Glenn Beck “Blew My Mind”

Bryon Williams, the right-wing extremist who got into a massive shoot-out in July with the CHP on I-580 in Oakland, is a huge fan of Glenn Beck and says in a new interview that the crazed Fox News host “blew” his mind, Media Matters reports. Williams, who is in Santa Rita jail for injuring two CHP officers, was on his way to blow up offices of the ACLU and the Tides Foundation in San Francisco when he launched the wild shootout. It turns out that Beck had mentioned the Tides Foundation, an obscure nonprofit, 29 times on his show and repeatedly linked the group to vast left-wing conspiracy theories.

In a new jailhouse interview, Williams tells of the conspiracy theory promulgated by Beck that sent him over the edge — an intricate plot involving President Obama, the Tides Foundation, liberal philanthropist George Soros, a Brazilian oil company, and the BP Gulf disaster. Of Beck, who is known for spinning wild, unsubstantiated stories, Williams says: “And it was the things that he did, it was the things he exposed that blew my mind. Beck would never say anything about a conspiracy, would never advocate violence, he'll never do anything like, of this nature, but he'll give you every ounce of evidence that you could possibly need.”

Liberal commentators, such as Berkeley's Markos Moulitsas, founder of the blog, Daily Kos, have argued for the past two years that the anti-Obama fervor on Fox News and other right-wing media is spurring right-wing extremists to violent behavior. The Oakland shootout-case could end up proving their argument.
