Oakland East Bay Symphony

When: Fri., Feb. 27, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $20-$65

If you can attend three concerts this weekend, start with the Oakland East Bay Symphony Celebrating Youth ConcertFriday night. Then check out the star-studded Mills Music Festival celebration of Darius Milhaud's Brazilian Connection on Saturday night, and soprano Nicole Cabell's Cal Performances debut recital Sunday afternoon. But for those feeling the economic pinch, OEBS's concert is the priority. Not everyone's bells will ring at the prospect of the Oakland Youth Orchestra and OEBS playing a side-by-side rendition of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, but the chance to hear OEBS 2008 Young Artist Competition winner Jeremiah Campbell, 19, perform Barber's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra should not be missed. Campbell, a CrowdenSchool graduate, is already making waves in NYC, where he is principal cellist with the Juilliard Orchestra and a member of its acoustic and electronic ensembles. Mendelssohn's Scottish Symphony No. 3 rounds out the concert that epitomizes OEBS's major commitment to youth. At the Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway, Oakland) on Friday, Feb. 27. 8 p.m., $20-$65.
