Re: “Yelp Extortion Allegations Stack Up

Thank you for an insightful article! After reading it, in retrospect, I also received multiple sales calls to advertise with them and I declined. I never connected the dots until now. I was told that I have a few positive reviews with a 5 star rating. When they realized I wasn't interested in advertising with them, a few of my positive reviews reviews disappeared. Yelp's algorithms read these reviews as being coerced because the clients who posted the reviews were new to Yelp or if they were longer Yelp members that Yelp read as possible business friends. If a consumer and business owner who is a friend uses my services and decides to post a review, why is it wrong? The review still gives a prospective client an idea of the quality of my services.

I also have small business friends who experienced the same thing with some of their positive reviews removed by Yelp. Unfortunately, one business friend has a bogus negative review posted on Yelp. She tried and tried (by contacting Yelp) to have it removed as it is hurting her business, although it is bogus.

Manipulation of reviews in the end impacts Yelp, as it's a less dependable place to post reviews. Some bogus negative reviews exist. Some positive reviews are removed, so how much can a prospective consumer trust what is posted? In addition, why would small businesses want to work with a company who will manipulate reviews (push the more positive ones to the top and push down negative reviews in the list) for advertising dollars? What else will Yelp do?

I send clients who want to post online reviews to Google or MerchantCircle. Why fight Yelp? As a small business owner, I need to work on growing my business not Yelp.

My small business friends send their clients who want to post reviews to Google, Yahoo, MerchantCircle, on their websites and other online websites.

Now, why hasn't Yelp generated a profit yet? Help me here. ;)
