These days, the term "metal" covers such wide terrain (AC/DC, Gorgoroth, the Sword) as to almost be irrelevant. Seemingly only sharing a loud, aggressive quality, there's a whole crop of subgenres that requires distinction (black metal, nü metal, speed metal, stoner metal, etc.). One of the most intriguing to have emerged is post-metal, which combines the pretty, epic aesthetic of post-rock instrumentalism with crushing riffs and (sometimes) gruff vocals (which act more like another instrument). Tucson, Arizona's North adds a compelling voice to the ambitious subgenre. Ambient like Isis, bleaker and dirtier than Pelican, and with sandpaper-rough (though occasionally screeching) vocals not unlike Intronaut, North creates beauty amid the crushing wall of noise. See them with Cloud Archive and Long Live the Smoking Gun at Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St., San Francisco) on Monday, Jan. 12. 9 p.m., $8. BottomoftheHill.com
