Action/Adventure, Drama
North Face – In 1936 Nazi Germany, two Bavarian mountaineers (played by Benno Fürmann and Flortan Lukas) enter the competition to scale the treacherous North Face of Switzerland’s Eiger Mountain – spurred on by the Hitler government’s propaganda machinery. Once they get up on the rock walls and ice fields, however, all political chicanery takes a backseat to some of the most thrilling mountain-climbing action ever put on film. Director and co-screenwriter Philipp Stölzl achieves incredible realism in the film’s Swiss and Austrian locations, and the actors bring a real-world touch of Nazi menace to the icy terrain, which is already scary enough. Costarring Johanna Wokalek as a friendly reporter and Ulrich Tukur as a creepy newspaper editor (126 min.).
