Noel Jewkes Septet with Kay Kostopoulos

When: Sat., April 20, 8 p.m. 2019
Price: $20.00 - $25.00
A tenor saxophonist who swings with ebullient authority, Noel Jewkes has been a mainstay on the Bay Area music scene for some six decades. At 78, his playing is as incisive and graceful as ever, providing a direct link to jazz’s Presidential Era, when many of the greatest tenor saxophonists honored Lester “Pres” Young with every cool note. He’s been having a ball lately with his Legato Express, a stellar septet featuring alto saxophonist Charlie McCarthy, trumpeter Dave Bendigkeit, trombonist Rob Ewing, pianist Sam Cady, bassist Adam Gay, and drummer Mark Lee. Vocalist Kay Kostopoulos adds a jolt of drama to the proceedings with a cache of unusual songs and a Mediterranean inflection (material she recorded with Jewkes on 2016’s Black Olive Jazz project Exotica).
