No More I Love Yous

When: Mondays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Continues through March 6 2020
Annie Lennox’s 1995 song, “No More I Love Yous,” inspired this group show examining romantic love, just in time for Valentine’s Day, featuring untitled works by Juan Aguilera, Casey Byrnes, Rosena Finister, Susan Janow, Stephanie Nguyen, William Scott, Gerone Spruill, and Ron Veasey. (It’s also a tribute to artist Leigh Markopoulos, a friend of the gallery, who did a similar show.) Guest curator Anton Stuebner: “Lennox’s version has always been a paradox to me, equal parts torch song and anthem. At first listen, it sounds like a ballad about overcoming heartbreak and longing. At its core, however, the song explores ... how language often fails to capture the complexity of our interior lives.” The vivid, comic portraits of Scott; the simplified figuration of Aguilera, Spruill, Veasey, and Finister; the abstractions of Janow and Nguyen; and the ribald ceramics of Byrne make for a humorous, human look at the mating dance.
