Re: “Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

I am a lab science teacher in an urban high school in NJ. My classes include all races and achievement levels as required by the state. The ONLY reason certain students don't pass my class is because they absolutely refuse to do the written work, and their parents won't back me up and require their kids to complete it. Instead, they come up with 50 million excuses as to why their kids can't do it (and none of them have anything to do with intelligence). Orally, I see little difference between the students - they can all answer the questions correctly. The gap occurs only because some students do the work and others don't. The last marking period my classes earned only 3 grades: A, B, or F, depending upon whether they did the work or not.

As for the tests, I've administered them and I can tell you that part of the problem lies in the fact that certain students color in the little circles without even opening the test booklet and reading the questions. THAT is why their scores are so low.

Bottom line: It's not because they can't succeed, it's because they won't.
