Ninety Miles featuring Stefon Harris, Davíd Sanchez, and Christian Scott

When: Tue., Aug. 23, 8 & 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $12, $20

Many artists who'd qualify as "the new school of jazz" -- meaning they grew up listening to a mix of traditional jazz and modern hip-hop -- spend their whole careers trying to marry these seemingly disparate genres. That's no easy task, since one is based on improvisation, live performance, and canonical study, while the other is based on the cutting-and-pasting of samples. They're essentially at cross purposes. Nonetheless, artists like vibraphonist Stefon Harris (who used to perform with the SFJAZZ ensemble), trumpeter Christian Scott, and saxophonist Davíd Sanchez have made a real go of it, often by oscillating between pop-oriented fusion and purely imaginative sounds. All three have made it beyond "young lion" status, and as a result, their compositional styles have matured. But they're still not afraid to experiment. Check out the Sanchez-Harris-Scott trifecta in their fusion project, Ninety Miles, which began with a recording the three made last year in Havana, Cuba. It's arresting. At Oakland Yoshi's (510 Embarcadero, Oakland) on Tuesday, Aug. 23.8 & 10 p.m., $12, $20.
