Death metal doesn't get a whole lot more brutal than Krisiun. Hailing from Brazil (home to a long-thriving metal scene), the band plays an assaultive, authoritative style characterized by jaw-dropping technical precision and machine-gun-like riffs and drumming. While the trio -- bassist/vocalist Alex Camargo, brothers Moyses (guitar) and Max (drums) Kolesne -- hasn't changed its approach much since starting in 1990, it's managed to continually refine its sound, the most recent example being 2008's Southern Storm, a well-produced effort that explodes through the speakers. While the unrelenting pummeling can get a bit exhausting, Krisiun manages to change things up (relatively speaking) on tracks like "Minotaur" and "Whore of the Unlight." Surprisingly catchy, with an underlying groove, this band is stunning live. Krisiun opens for fellow technical death metalers Nile, with Immolation and Dreaming Dead, at Slim's (333 11th St., San Francisco) on Saturday, Jan. 30. 8 p.m., $26, $30.
