Crime drama, Thriller
Jake Gyllenhaal is suitably creepy and the urban crash-and-crime situations are lurid without losing their cool realism, in writer-director Dan Gilroy’s story of a ghoulish, ambulance-chasing TV news videographer (Gyllenhaal) and his misadventures in the underbelly of Los Angeles. Gilroy, writer of The Bourne Legacy and The Fall, scores all the easy points plus a few more difficult ones as Gyllenhaal’s ultra-opportunistic Lou Bloom interacts with an unscrupulous broadcast exec (Rene Russo), a rival video hunter (Bill Paxton), and his own dim-bulb assistant (Roz Ahmed). Despite the grisly trimmings and Lou’s unhinged manner, this topical thriller is cold, analytical, and dry as a bone (117 min.).
