I would like to learn more about the facts, where can one find the Oakland factcheck, please?
I may be one of those 342 non-predatory landlords. I bought my duplex home 12 years ago with the idea that one day I would move in my mom so she can age in place close by. That is still another 5-10 years in the future but facing the possibility that our plan will be blocked by new rules, is really disappointing to say the least. It seems that to take possession again, I would need to raise the rent to cover the new $8-10k of fees the measure would impose, so who will pay for all of that? My Oakland tenant. Will it stop an eviction? No. Will it require more laws, fees, and necessary use of lawyers for us owners of a single rental unit ? It sure looks that way. Who will pay for all that in the end? Our tenants, in the form of higher rents. So, so many unintended consequences. I can see why other small owner-occupiers would want to sell their duplexes & triplexes and get out of the business. So less supply of rentals is surely going to be another result, one that is totally NOT what we need right now, it's the opposite, we need more units available,, not fewer.
