Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad

When: Sun., Aug. 9, 8 p.m. 2009
Price: $10-$15

Formerly a high school cheerleader, Susannah Perlman has all the requisite skills that go with the job: modern dance, hip-hop, go-go, acrobatics, well-sculpted limbs, buttony features, and a bad attitude. In adulthood, she added her sense of humor to try and make it as a stand-up comic and burlesque dancer. She learned two things: 1) That the two forms mix together quite well, and 2) That it's easier to package them if you have some kind of theme that ties everything together. Ergo, "Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad," a variety show that Perlman created six years ago for Heebmagazine. She recruited a cast of similarly saucy Jewish girls who could dance and quip, and didn't shy away from the outré. Today, her show features a rotating cast of thirty to forty women from various cultural backgrounds (including Syrian and Puerto Rican Jewish girls -- Perlman's only requirement is that you have one Jewish parent and identify "in some kind of way"). Their act includes a Hasidic Strip (a striptease that begins with two girls dressed as Hasidic Jews), a hip-hop version of the Yiddish song "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," and "HavaNagila Go-Go." Perlman says she's gotten a little flack from the ultra-orthodox, but most people find it hilarious. On Sunday, Aug. 9, at Shattuck Down Low (2284 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley) 7 p.m., $10-$15.
