IGNITE 2018: All Women’s Gala

Oakland’s Labrys School, a nonprofit that promotes self-healing and empowerment to women and girls of all ages, races, income levels, and lifestyles, is hosting a New Year’s gala to raise funds for their new GRRRLS program. The program will offer innovation and inspiration to girls in middle school, high school, and college as they deal with the dreams and dilemmas of their lives. The night’s festivities will include nourishing food and drinks, dancing, multicultural music and singing, and merrymaking festivities and rituals in an attempt to offer a moment of introspection before the calendar flips. The event is ADA accessible, and also alcohol-, drug-, and fragrance-free. Ages 16 and up. — Rick Paulas

8 p.m.-12:30 a.m., $50 early bird discount (before Dec. 15), $75 otherwise. Humanist Hall, 390 27th St., Oakland, Ignite2018.eventbrite.com

Lawrence Hall of Science’s Annual New Year’s Eve Balloon Drop

If staying up past midnight doesn’t sound particularly appealing, the Lawrence Hall of Science has you covered. The famed science museum is holding its annual balloon drop during the underutilized daytime hours of New Year’s Eve. This year, to accommodate the crowds, the countdowns will occur thrice, once at 11 a.m., again at 1 p.m., and one final time at 3 p.m. The fun of the drop is free with the price of admission ($12 for adults, $10 for kids), so we suggest spending the time between the drops exploring the distant universe and the hidden wonders of our very own home planet. — R.P.

11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m., free for members, included with admission. The Lawrence Hall of Science, 1 Centennial Dr., Berkeley, LawrenceHallofScience.org

Dining
New Year’s Eve at Copper Spoon

North Oakland’s Copper Spoon feels like a prime destination for a low-key but still celebratory New Year’s Eve. The 2-month-old American restaurant, which replaced Art’s Crab Shack on Broadway, sports an effortlessly hip aesthetic and an epic cocktail program led by co-owner Vita Simone Strauss, who once worked at Bar Dogwood, Prizefighter, and other prominent East Bay bars. For New Year’s Eve, the restaurant is serving a $79 four-course meal, which includes a glass of hibiscus sparkling wine but excludes tax and gratuity. Among the dinner options are short ribs with root vegetables and bourbon sauce; citrusy swordfish with fermented kohlrabi; and a trio of squash for vegetarians. In addition to live music, a DJ, and midnight toast, Copper Spoon promises surprise party favors for diners. — Janelle Bitker

5:30 p.m.-2 a.m., $79, Copper Spoon, 4031 Broadway, Oakland, CopperSpoonOakland.com.

New Year’s Eve at Calavera

Not everyone wants to rage — or even stay up until midnight — on New Year’s Eve. For the person who wants to celebrate while still getting to sleep at a decent hour, a special dinner out is usually the way to go. This year, Uptown, Oakland’s Calavera is preparing a four-course feast with two possible seating times. Reserve for 5 p.m. and pay $55 or 8 p.m. for $75, the latter giving you just enough time to head to your chosen midnight destination — bed or otherwise. The menu includes three or four choices per course, including wild mushroom tamal with huitlacoche mole; chocolate-braised goat with nixtamal tortillas; and Veracruz-style red snapper. Most intriguing, though, are the desserts: chocolate-mole pot de crème, cotija cheesecake, and sweetened root vegetables. — J.B.

5:30 p.m.-11 p.m., $55 or $75, Calavera, 2337 Broadway, Oakland, CalaveraOakland.com.

Music

California Honeydrops at UC Theatre

Don’t let the green grass fool you, local ensemble California Honeydrops sings. Actually, it’s a Wilson Pickett song, but it’s one of the band’s favorites and perfectly encapsulates its ethos — a dance party sound clashing head-first with life’s harsh realities. The group has become popular all across the country with its infectious music combining classic R&B, funk, New Orleans jazz, snappy rockabilly, and Delta blues. The members have years of experience riling up a crowd. They started out by busking on the streets of San Francisco and eventually worked their way into the club circuit and pretty much took over. Their bio says they don’t play music, “they throw parties.” Really, isn’t that the whole reason to put on some pants and head out to ring in the New Year? Even introverts are guaranteed to let loose. It’s worth a shot, anyway. — Aaron Carnes

8 p.m., $55-$75, The UC Theatre Taube Family Music Hall, 2036 University Ave., Berkeley, TheUCTheatre.org

Club 21’s Massive New Year’s Eve

Northern California’s largest gay nightclub will open its multiple levels of dance floors, bars, and lounges for its annual New Year’s Eve bash. This year’s fun will be hosted by the always boisterous Violeta, while DJs will be spinning the best in Latin, hip-hop, house, and Top 40. You can also enjoy go-go dancers, a free buffet, and the obligatory balloon drop, and there’s a 99.9999 percent chance you’ll get to shake it to “Despacito.” — R.P.

9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., $TBA, $5 off before 11 p.m. with guest list. Club 21, 2111 Franklin St., Oakland, Club21Oakland.com.

Extra Action Marching Band at Brick and Mortar

Anyone that joined the marching band in high school is a nerd. Of course, American Pie let the world in on a little secret — band geeks are crazy and a bit dangerous. Unfortunately, most marching bands don’t reflect this in their performance. Well, there is Oakland’s own, Extra Action Marching Band, which brings scantily clad, pom-pom-carrying cheerleaders and marching band covers of Black Sabbath tunes. Though, most of the band’s music sounds in the realm of what you’d expect a football halftime band to play, but there’s a real aggressive, punk-rock energy to how they play it. (Years of crashing parties and accosting quiet bars will do that.) Even if you pay money this New Year’s to go see them knowing what you’ll get, don’t expect them to stay on stage and respect the normal boundary lines that your average band would. This will be a crazy night. You’ll barely remember 2017 after they’re done. — A.C.

9 p.m., $26, $30, Brick and Mortar, 1710 Mission St., San Francisco, BrickandMortarMusic.com

Goapele at Yoshi’s

Goapele is Oakland. At least she embodies the best traits of the city. Her parents were political activists that came to Oakland from South Africa (father) and New York (mother), and they instilled a sense of social justice in her, which she expresses in her music — a thoughtful blend of R&B and soul, that is at once carnal and cerebral. She’s been making brilliant alt-soul for a couple decades now, and although she’s not a household name, she’s big enough to pack clubs. And, of course, whenever she plays Oakland, it’s a special occasion. She says that her latest EP, Dreamcatcher, is a return to her roots. It’s a great collection of songs that stays in the mid-tempo and evokes an ethereal mood, at times borrowing from some African and tribal rhythms. The music is intimate and hits a certain dreamy vibe that will put you in the perfect New Year’s spirit. She’ll play an early and a late show. The late show costs more, because you get to ring in the New Year with Goapele. — A.C.

8 p.m. & 11 p.m., $69-$99, Yoshi’s, 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland, Yoshis.com

Poolside & Dam Funk at Public Works

LA duo Poolside gets all the best descriptions for its music. The group calls it “daytime disco” and one critic praised its “supremely casual decadence.” If those descriptions don’t give you a mental auditory image, then imagine a blend of chillwave, New Wave pop, disco, and ’90s rave culture, and then put a pair of sunglasses and an ironic fedora on it. The music is surprisingly sunny-sounding and really danceable, so if you are all about mind-altering drugs and sweat-till-you-drop dancing this New Year’s, Poolside is sure to have you covered. Expect to stay up all night long (the show goes ’til 3:30 a.m.), and then you can welcome the New Year while watching the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. Dam Funk opens with a sure-to-be-groovy DJ set. — A.C.

9 p.m., $25-$60, Public Works, 161 Erie St., San Francisco, PublicSF.com

Primus: A Goblin in the New Year at Fox

New Year’s Eve is about remembering the good times of the past year and thinking about the exciting things to come. But what if the world has gone to hell and we’re all screwed? Then Primus’ New Year’s party is just the thing for you. The group’s new album is based on a weird Italian children’s book from 1978 called The Rainbow Goblins about a group of gluttonous elites that suck all the color out of the world. The masses overcome their greed by banning together and taking them on. Primus’ adaptation is a thinly veiled allegory for the times we’re living in now. They bring their usual brand of oddball characters and bad acid trip visuals to a story that offers a small glimmer of hope in a time when all seems lost. Plus, New Year’s Eve parties are kind of Primus’ thing. Legend of the Seagullmen (with Tool’s Danny Carey and Mastodon’s Brent Hinds) open the festivities — A.C.

9:30 p.m., $49.50, $69.50, Fox Theatre, 1807 Telegraph Ave., Oakland, TheFoxOakland.com

Seth MacFarlane and the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall

Do you know what Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane loves besides non-sequiturs and offensive jokes? Singing pre-rock ‘n’ roll-era standards. That’s what he’ll be doing in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve, and it sounds odd to suggest, but it may be classiest show of the night. MacFarlane’s passion for old musicals and Rat Pack-era jazz is immense, and he’s got an amazing voice to boot, with wonderful pitch, timber, and control. At this event, he’ll be backed by the San Francisco Symphony and will croon some of the snappiest jazz songs your grandfather loved all night long. Chances are even he didn’t love these songs nearly as much as MacFarlane does. Edwin Outwater will be the conductor this evening. — A.C.

8 p.m., $89-$229, Davies Symphony Hall, 201 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco, SFSymphony.org
