Founded by lifelong activists Arthur Lipow (who participated in European Disarmament Now) and Gretchen Lipow (who served as the Free Speech Movement's treasurer), the Alameda Public Affairs Forum (2242 San Antonio Ave., Alameda) is a non-partisan nonprofit that presents seminars on local, national, and international affairs. Check out the facilities at a family-friendly New Year's Day Open House on Thursday, Jan. 1; bring food or drinks to share. 1 p.m. AlamedaPublicAffairsForum.org
