Could there be any more universal, quintessential comfort food than dumplings? Colorful, intricately folded dumplings with extravagant fillings might rack up Instagram likes, but sometimes the most comfort-filled dumplings are the ones that you’d find ordinary people making at home. That’s the kind of dumplings you’ll find at New Dumpling in El Cerrito, a small, bustling family-run restaurant that opened in April 2019. New Dumpling specializes in jiaozi, which are made to order with fresh wheat wrappers, stuffed with the fillings of your choice, folded, and boiled. There are some classic options like the shrimp with chives and pork, as well as some more unusual options like pork and green pepper, shrimp with zucchini and egg, beef and carrot, and egg and tomato. Try the green onion pancake as a starter, with a flaky texture that’s a nice foil to the soft dumplings. Don’t miss the side dishes, particularly the seaweed salad and the thinly sliced, crunchy pig ear salad.
