After years of penning R&B hits for other artists, Ne-Yofinally found the pop-music formula that would make him a star in his own right. He emerged in 2006 with the album Because of You, which included a spate of hits ("So Sick," "Sexy Love," "When You're Mad") characterized by their sweet, tender lyrics, bubbly chord changes, and bedrock hip-hop beats. Ne-Yo had a couple things going that distinguished him from the pack: First, a pliant alto voice that doesn't require a whole lot of digital manipulation; second, a knack for writing songs with an implied rise or bridge section. He organized this year's Year of the Gentleman around the theme of bringing chivalry back into the realm of popular R&B. As a concept, it's fairly simple; as a marketing hook, it's brilliant. Ne-Yo performs at Oakland's Paramount Theatre (2025 Broadway) on Friday, Feb. 6. 8 p.m., $39-$85.
