Nature Studies

When: Nov. 4-Jan. 4 2012

Outdoors-lovers, we're told, should take only pictures; Susan Felter and Mimi Plumb prove that photographs can go beyond mere souvenir image capture. Felter'sHunting & Gathering series combines close-ups of foliage and water superimposed with digital forage, i.e., scanned additions, creating what might be termed environmental abstractions; "Reptiles Up," "Snake Bouquet," and "Sky Twigs" transform the small details and larger picture into poetic reveries on wildness and wilderness. Plumb focuses on the equine landscape in her Horse Back series, using models enlisted from Petaluma's Chocolate Horse Farm ("Harley in Silhouette," "Silver Echo," and "Stormy Stevie"). Plumb: "What is worth preserving? Horses, the line of their backs, the wind in their manes, the cold blue light of the late afternoon sky. The horses embody ... the rolling hills of California." Nature Studies, curated by Suzy Barnard and Janet Delaney, runs through Jan. 4 at Local 123 Gallery (2049 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley). 510-647-5270 or Local123Cafe.com
