Re: “Juhu Beach Club Sponsors New Parklet in Temescal

Wow, what an offensive design. The "Ohlone canoe" looks like a modern pleasure craft. You can't paddle around a canoe with a canopy on it. Thoughtless cultural appropriation, it takes a five second google search to understand that sweat lodges were and are a cultural and spiritual place, not an outdoor overflow seating area on a busy street. This shows a heavy water use planting shown and a high budget. There is no reason a project the size of a parklet needs to cost $29,000. If Preeti Mistry wants to give back to the neighborhood, she should ask the people of the neighborhood what they want, and ask the Ohlone descendants, who are still lacking rights, how they would like to be represented. It's great to honor history, but it is not 1995, putting a Spanish cow sculpture next to a "sweat lodge" and a "canoe" in the space a size of a few parking spots isn't honoring anyone.
