Nancy Mullane

When: Wed., March 13, 7:30-9:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $12 advance, $15 at the door

In 2007, award-winning journalist Nancy Mullane was writing an article on overcrowding at San Quentin when she met five men in the prison, each serving life sentences for murder with a slight possibility of gaining parole. Looking at recidivism rates for the small percentage of murderers who successfully made it out of prison, Mullane learned that, of the 1,000 paroled in California from 1990 to 2011, none had committed another murder. She then asked the question, riddled with person-to-person complexity: Can a murderer ever be redeemed? And if so, what does that redemption look like? Join Mullane on Wednesday, Mar. 13, at the Hillside Club (2286 Cedar St., Berkeley) as she discusses her book, Life After Murder: Five Men in Search of Redemption. 7:30 p.m., $12.
