Namwali Serpell in Conversation with Yael Goldstein Love Free Staff Pick One Day Only

When: Fri., April 12, 7:30 p.m. 2019
Published last month to great acclaim, Namwali Serpell’s debut novel, The Old Drift, is off to a remarkable start. Salman Rushdie gave it a glowing review in The New York Times, and the book has earned Serpell comparisons to the work of Toni Morrison and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. A sweeping historical novel about Zambia, the author’s country of birth, the book follows three families whose interconnecting narrative combines elements of fairy tales, family sagas, Gothic novels and transcendental science fiction. An associate professor of English literature at Cal and a 2015 winner of the Caine Prize for African writing, Serpell will be joined in conversation by Yael Goldstein Love, co-founder and Editorial Director of the digital literary studio Plympton.
