Re: “Merritt College Nursing Woes

I am a nursing student attending the Merritt program this year and I passed the first three exams. The tests are extremely difficult and there is an enormous amount of material to learn. My experience has been that the teachers are knowledgeable, dedicated and adhere very strictly to a high academic and professional standard. The most difficult part of the program for me thus far has been dealing with the students who did not pass and this attitude of anger, entitlement and desperation that pervaded the first half of the semester. I dreaded coming to lecture the last couple weeks before the third exam because I felt pressure to sign a petition and join a group protest against the program. I just wanted to learn and be able to get as much information out of lecture time as I could. Several hours of lecture time were lost due to the faculty and administration having to address the concerns of failing students. I have never in my life seen students behave so disrespectfully in an academic setting. Students were constantly talking during lecture, making derogatory remarks about instructors and speaking negatively about the program. This general air of tension impacted me physically, emotionally and cognitively. I am thrilled to still be a part of this program and am currently having an amazing clinical experience. To the students who didn't pass and to the ones who did, but chose not to continue anyway, I am sorry for your frustration and discontent. I wish you all the best and hope that if nursing is your calling you will keep on pursuing it as a profession. Merritt has some obvious problems and issues this year, but the program is working for me and I'm just grateful to have the opportunity to get this type of training at a a public community school level.
