It may be Guy Maddin’s best film. It’s certainly his most personal — a typically Maddinesque blend of mock-doc and eerie tone poem in which the filmmaker takes a sentimental journey back to his Canadian hometown, a place of ghostly hockey players, the White Block House where he grew up, underground rivers, frozen horses’ heads protruding from the ice, and snow, lots of snow. He was right to get away from there. Maddin’s casting of actor Ann Savage (cult favorite star of Edgar Ulmer’s Detour) as his mother is masterstroke (80 min.).
