Drama
Massive insecurity meets towering ego in the behind-the-scenes dramatization of Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) being directed by Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) in the movie The Prince and the Showgirl, circa 1956 – as seen through the eyes of a starstruck young assistant director named Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne). Williams is genuinely good as vulnerable Marilyn and Branagh is too, as the imperious Olivier, although they work together better if we can suspend our disbelief – Branagh is too chubby and unglamorous to play Olivier, despite his perfect vocal impersonation. Adrian Hodges’ screenplay, based on Clark’s tell-all memoir, seems stamped from the same pattern as Me and Orson Welles. In the large supporting cast are Julia Ormond as Vivien Leigh (huh?), Zoë Wanamaker as Marilyn’s acting coach, and Dougray Scott as MM’s playwright husband, Arthur “She’s devouring me” Miller. Directed dutifully by Simon Curtis. Typical Weinstein Co. Oscar bait. (99 min.)
