My Fiery Furnace

When: Aug. 14-Sept. 7 2019
Gary-Paul Barbosa Prince’s show of recent work is entitled My Fiery Furnace, a nod to his Inferno gallery in East Oakland, and the ongoing trial by fire — in incendiary political rhetoric as well as live ammo — that is currently devastating America. (Our evangelical saints are not as fireproof, however, as the biblical Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego.) Prince, a Mexican-American who grew up in Texas, addresses the themes of racism, immigration and gun culture by subverting baroque Catholic art; his gilded saints and painted sacrificial victims perform an artistic détournement assailing the sanctimonious hypocrisy of the Trump era, sometimes along the humorous, satirical lines of the soon-to-be-discontinued MAD Magazine, a strong artistic influence. (What, us worry?) Don’t miss “Ecce Homo,” its Man of Sorrows thornily crowned by corporate logos; a crucifixion sculpture, “Machine Gun Jesus” with the cross transfigured into an assault trifle; and two religious-glory paintings with cartoony barnyard animals.
