Mutual Benefit

When: Sat., Jan. 25, 9 p.m. 2014
Price: $10, $12
“Strong River,” the first track on Mutual Benefit’s debut album, Love’s Crushing Diamond, opens with the faint sound of wind chimes: They create a soft, comforting, and hopeful feeling, a sensation that lasts throughout the remainder of the album’s delicate folk-pop songs. Songwriter Jordan Lee uses keys, guitar, violin, banjo, homemade percussion, and found sounds to create songs that envelope the listener. It’s truly beautiful music, the sonic equivalent of a rushing stream in a lush forest. And Lee prevents the album from drifting into cloying territory with his insightful poetry: e.g., And in the water I could see/A piece of what you broke in me/I took a walk my usual way/I called to quit my job today, he sings on “Golden Water.” Prepare to have feelings. Dan Casey and Dim Peaks will open the show at the Rickshaw Stop (155 Fell St., San Francisco).
