Mutoid Man

When: Fri., March 7, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $10
Metal bookers of the world have failed the Bay Area this week: Three shows on Friday and two on Tuesday promise to not only split audiences but also likely fry the decision-making faculties of many fans. On Friday, will it be the cinematic post-rock of Russian Circles and gut-shaking tunes of Helms Alee (Great American Music Hall); the heady, tree-hugging post-metal of Scale the Summit, The Ocean, and Atlas Moth (Bottom of the Hill); or the stoner-rock-on-steroids of Mutoid Man (Sub-Mission), which features former members of Converge and Cave In? (Tough one, but I’d vote for the last option.) After your neck recuperates, Tuesday pits the shoegazey black metal of Deafheaven (Oakland Metro) against heavy music’s old guard, Tool, who’ll be joined by Failure, the influential LA alt-rockers who recently reunited for the first time in sixteen years. Those latter two acts play Wednesday night as well (both at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium), but if you miss Failure this time around, don’t despair — the band is planning a national headlining tour this spring, with dates to be announced soon.
