All teenage-girl coming-of-age movies are not created equal. Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s high-spirited adolescent drama shows what happens when five independent-minded young sisters in contemporary Northern Turkey get put under house arrest by their conservative Muslim family in order to keep them from getting together with boys – full-scale rebellion, with rope ladders, secret sex, and a headstrong determination to lead their own lives. Günes Sensoy stars as Lale, the youngest sister and leader of the revolt. Enforced chastity? Not in this family, not now. Written by French-trained director Ergüven, who wrote her screenplay with Alice Winokur (97 min.).
