Many contemporary bands (indie or not) are one-trick ponies -- a combo establishes their style/shtick, then mine it until it's played out. Not so with locals Mushroom. Like the fungi they're named for, Mushroom is an organic entity -- sometimes playfully, dreamily psychedelic (in the vein of Gong or early Pink Floyd), then earnestly rockin' old-school (nifty covers of Spirit and Steppenwolf), or jamming into the ionosphere by commingling Kraut rock (Can, Neu!) with lusty soul-jazz rhythms (think Charles Earland, Jack McDuff). With core players and flexible/revolving membership, Mushroom has utilized some premium local talent -- Ralph Carney, Dan Olmsted, Gary Floyd, and Alison Faith Levy. Its upcoming performance will feature Carney, visiting original keyboardist Michael Holt (now of Mommyheads), and Naked Barbies' Patty Spiglanin, one of the Bay Area's best and most distinctive singers. Friday, Aug. 29 at Starry Plough (3101 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley).Moore Brothers and Matt Baldwin open. StarryPloughPub.com or 510-841-2082.
