Re: “Embracing the Spectrum

Kudos to Ms. Brill and Ms. Ryan for their empathetic approach to this complex issue. Our culture 'digitizes' individual human beings [into 0s and 1s, i.e. males and females] from the moment their anatomical gender is discovered in utero. Thanks to these pioneering leaders for recognizing that there are more than 2 types of human beings and that we don't need to be permanently stamped at birth with either a preference for pink, fairies, and dolls OR a preference for blue, cars, and toy soldiers.

I feel sorry for the folks who made critical comments here (and, moreover, for their children). I imagine these families might not allow a boy to enjoy cooking or a girl to enjoy toy trains and wearing camouflage pants. It is a shame not to expose children to, and permit them to experiment with, the world's range of interests, hobbies, subjects of study, and experiences and let them decide for themselves where their preferences lie.

I hope that the many skeptics of Ms. Brill's approach will leave their minds open so that the empirical evidence (of children's self-fulfillment and genuine happiness when given the freedom to express their individual natures) can speak for itself.
