Darren Robey must be, like, the twentieth chef to pick up the kitchen clipboard at this once-maverick restaurant that opened in 1981. Founding owner Virginia Mudd’s vision of a cottagey, vaguely Norse-looking dining room opening onto a working garden still has juice, despite Mudd’s recent reputation for pricey, mediocre food. Robey is dragging the place into the current century, with hotel-caliber cooking reflecting the glory of the gardens just beyond the stone patios. Leave time for a stroll among the corn rows and apple trees.
