John Farley (Seann William Scott) spent his whole life trying to get over the damage to his self-esteem inflicted by his sadistic junior-high gym teacher, Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton) -- which is why, when he returns home to accept an award for his best-selling self-help book, he freaks at the knowledge his mother (Susan Sarandon) is going to marry the bastard. Though the movie has been marketed as another obnoxious Scott vehicle, it's anything but thanks to some indie pacing and direction from Craig Gillespie. It's not a comedy masterpiece, but it's surprisingly smart and will make you laugh aloud more than a few times.
