Not an ounce of fat in this gorgeously wrought portrait of the adolescent Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart (Marie Féret), older sister of Wolfgang Amadeus (played by David Moreau), whose own composing and performing genius was overshadowed, largely because of her gender. The wonderfully detailed depiction of the Mozart family’s life as a traveling “music masters” show for rich patrons is bolstered by fine performances by young Lisa Féret (like Marie, a daughter of writer-director René Féret), as one neglected child of King Louis XV of France, and actor Clovis Fouin as the other. Like child prodigy Nannerl, whose father Léopold Mozart (Marc Barbé) forced her to play second fiddle to her brother, the king’s children are bound by a strict set of societal rules that suffocates them. Terrific classical music score by composer Marie-Jeanne Séréro, who essentially guessed what Nannerl’s would have sounded like — her compositions were all destroyed. (120 min.)
