Drama, Suspense/Thriller
South Korea’s Bong Joo-ho proves himself one of that cinema-mad country’s finest directors with this intricately woven, emotionally powerful story of a developmentally challenged, small-town young man (actor Bin Won) charged with the murder of a young woman, and the harrowing lengths to which the young man’s mother (Kim Hye-ja, in a terrific performance) goes to defend him. As the mother trudges through the village in search of clues to exonerate her son, a sickening uneasiness settles into the scenario by Park Eun-kyo and director Bong – a despairing neo-noir filled with bizarre character details and odd twists. The whodunit moves forward in short, halting steps until it’s ready to leap up and scare the hell out of us, not with ghosts or creatures but with unpredictable human nature. A winner (128 min.).
