Soap opera narrative wed to pod-people characterization doesn’t help this earnest drama by filmmaker Rodrigo García, who tells the interlocking stories of a long-lost mother and daughter (Annette Bening and Naomi Watts, both cold as ice) reconnecting the hard way, unbeknownst to each other. Bening, Watts, Samuel L. Jackson (as a lawyer), Kerry Washington, and Elizabeth Peña turn in strong performances, but the flavor is all wrong. The robotic coupling recalls Blade Runner, unfortunately. Written and directed by García, who’s the son of novelist Gabriel García Marquez (125 min.).
