Most Wireless Coffeehouse

Nomad Cafe

Sometimes, when you walk into Nomad Cafe, you're bowled over by a wave of tranquillity. No, it's not because people are drinking decaf. It's because customers are all staring deep into their laptops as though bound together in some cyborg tantric ritual. Nomad's free wireless Internet access and deep-green ethics -- the cafe just won a waste-reduction award from the State of California -- bring in graphic designers, students, freelance writers, and execs working "from home." There are even a few computer stations for those who haven't evolved into wireless laptop owners. With local artists on the walls, singer-songwriter nights (not the time to draft your term paper), and fair-trade coffees, Nomad's owner is building other kinds of wireless networks with the greater community. You can hook in for the price of a latte.
