Most Surreal Shopping Experience

The Ex-Disco Clothier

At the corner of 27th and Telegraph rests a small strip mall with three shop stalls. The first holds Sam Won Billiards, and the third holds the Sam Won barbecue house. In between these two Korean hangouts is a pair of steel doors that lead downstairs into what used to be a happening disco where many of the trappings remain: girandoles, an overhead scaffold dotted with colored spotlights, and DJ booths now filled with excess stock. The basement now plays host to a stash of Korean furniture, clothing, and accessories, most of them knockoffs of designer labels. It's a strange place to visit, an even harder one to name: The signs upstairs are in Korean. On weekends, the owners stand in the doorway and cook fish pastries filled with red-bean paste, adding to the mystery of the place. An enigma within a disco within a Korean strip mall.
