Eurydice at the Berkeley Rep

It's not just that there wasn't a dry eye in the house at the end of each show when Les Waters staged Sarah Ruhl's new Eurydice at the Berkeley Rep. There wasn't a dry anything: The well-named Waters evoked the underworld and the River Styx with a host of devices, from a water fountain to a gently raked stage flowing with water and a gushing elevator. But the hydrotechnics didn't distract from this painful, sweet retelling of the myth of Orpheus and his doomed bride; Charles Shaw Robinson really shone as Eurydice's dead father who gets a brief reunion with his daughter, and Daniel Talbott's Orpheus was heartbreaking in his search for the glowing, chirpy Eurydice (Maria Dizzia). A visual feast as well as an emotional one, Eurydice was a beautiful surprise last year.
