Mose Allison

When: Sat., May 29, 8 & 10 p.m. and Sun., May 30, 7 & 9 p.m. 2010
Price: $22

A quietly iconic jazz legend, pianist Mose Allison has compiled an impressive canon and influenced a huge raft of artists including The Who, The Clash, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, and The Pixies. Allison continues to ply his trade, frequently leaving his Long Island home base to hit the road. Despite informally swearing off formal recording a while back, producer extraordinaire Joe Henry coaxed the soft-spoken Mississippi native back into putting down some tracks. The result was The Way of the World, Allison's first studio recording in thirteen years. Well worth the wait, these dozen cuts feature Allison's gentle croon and a laconic yet crisp touch on the '88s. The 82-year-old singer-songwriter still carries a sharp wit with him: Let's give God a vacation/And start making sense today he suggests on the quirky "Modest Proposal," and matter-of-factly points out My brain is losing power/1,200 neurons every hour/My brain, cool little cluster/that's my brain on the snappy shuffle "My Brain." Allison will be bringing all his body parts along with his jazzy witticisms to Yoshi's San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St., San Francisco) on Saturday, May 29, 8 & 10 p.m., and Sunday, May 30, 7 & 9 p.m. $22.
